MUSICALLY ENCOURAGING PRODUCTION

We mean exactly that! A recording session is an uncomfortable environment for most musicians, especially volunteer singers. And strange as it may seem, the conductor and musicians are not in the best position to hear all the details, nor is it likely that those making the music are able to judge whether the musical message is conveyed as desired.

The person in the best position to judge the performance is the producer. It is not common to have a producer/engineer team who is as musically accomplished as many of the artists, however our musical background spans over thirty years of orchestra playing that includes stints as a substitute musician with the Chicago, Detroit, and Atlanta Symphonies. I also spent many years playing in the Nashville Symphony (and in the studios there). On the flip side, I have toured with the Tommy Dorsey Band, the Les Elgart Orchestra, Paul Anka, and played the NBC "Midnight Special". My experiences as an organist and choirmaster have ranged from choirs of seven to playing at Truro Cathedral in England. This all enables me to communicate effectively with musicians of almost any genre, and provides the basis for critical musical judgments and technical decisions for the project at hand.

Ask any of our clients about their Sonare experience and the first thing they praise will be the production assistance, and the second thing they mention will be...

MAJOR LABEL SONICS

First-class sound must begin with first-class microphones. Our collection contains some of the finest made for capturing the true sonorities of acoustic music. They are the same brands and models used by major classical labels: Bruel & Kjaer (DPA), Royer, Neumann, and Schoeps (tube and solid-state). The Royer stereo ribbon microphone is simply startling in how it captures choral resonance. Our multi-channel Sequoia Digital Audio Workstation that we bring on location has editing tools you must see and hear to believe.

Gear without knowledge means little, however. Our engineering background includes the nationally syndicated WFMT-Milwaukee Symphony broadcasts, National Public Radio and many private clients and record labels such as Naxos Records and Crystal Records.

Because a recording is not a live experience and our ears do not function the same as microphones, we often employ more mics than the main array to increase musical clarity. In jazz, however, there are usually no "main" mics. Each instrument is individually captured. We always record jazz multi-track (up to 16 channels), and often will use multi-track in classical work to have options in post-production, thus saving session time for recording rather than experimenting. In this way we achieve an ideal mix back home in a controlled monitoring environment, which is virtually impossible on location. However, with any acoustic (rather than electric) musical event, the quality of the acoustics of the recording venue is critical. The great American organbuilder Ernest Skinner is quoted as saying that the most important stop on a pipe organ was the room. The same principle applies to other instrumental efforts!

Our engineering knowledge and production expertise are combined to offer an exceptional...

VALUE IN THE MARKETPLACE

Our CD package ($4995) includes everything you need: up to three unlimited days of recording, editing, mastering, 1,000 CDs that includes graphic design, deluxe full-size jewel case with transparent tray, 4-page (color cover) booklet, color traycard (with black-and-white on the tray side), color imprint on the CDs, UPC barcode, shrinkwrap, and worldwide distribution through the Klarity Music website. The best news is that this package will yield up to $10,000 in profit (after expenses) assuming a selling price of $15. In fact, the expenses are completely covered after as few as 330 are sold. For projects of less than three days we may be able to reduce the price of the package. And booklets up to 20 pages are an option for an additional fee to cover the increased design and printing expense.

For those artists who desire for their recording to be released on a CD label, we are pleased to offer limited access to several independent labels. We can supply more details after talking with you about your project.

Exceptional recordings are the fruit of musical talent coupled with the vision of the producer and the technique of the engineer. With Sonare, both roles are filled by one person which eliminates extra expense and assures a unified vision for your project. If you have a favorite producer or engineer, however, we are happy to work as a team!

We offer a full range of services that includes audition, recital, and concert recordings, compiling and mastering projects from pre-existing sources, noise removal and restoration services, plus high-definition surround projects.
